XTermium is a free, open-source terminal with a session manager for Windows, Linux and macOS. If you’re weighing it against a tool you use today, start here.

Side by side with the tools you know.

Each page says what the other tool is, from its own site, sets the two side by side in one table, says when to stay with it, and how to bring your sessions over. No scores, no prices of theirs.

Six tools, side by side.

The same nine questions, asked of each. Every answer is what the tool’s own pages say, with no scores and no prices of theirs.

Each tool’s column is from its own site, read on 4 November 2026; its page has the sources, the full table and how to move over: MobaXterm, Termius, mRemoteNG, Royal TS and PuTTY. XTermium’s column comes from its README. “Not mentioned on its site” means the pages read don’t say, not that the tool lacks it.

What XTermium is, in one paragraph.

A terminal with a session manager for Windows, Linux and macOS. SSH, SFTP, RDP, VNC, telnet, serial, WinRM, BMC consoles, websites and SSH tunnels open as tabs and split panes in one window. Everything it stores is encrypted on disk with a key in your OS keychain, and AI agents and scripts drive it through a local MCP server without seeing a password.

XTermium is free and open source under the Apache License 2.0: every connection type, on every OS, on any number of machines. Pro, the one paid plan, is the hosted part: end-to-end encrypted sync between your computers, and Terminal Co-op.

Free and open source. One command fetches the latest build from GitHub, checks its sha256 and installs it; read install.ps1 or install.sh first. Every file and its checksum, Scoop included, are under Downloads, and the .msi, .exe, .zip, .deb, .rpm, AppImage and .dmg are in the latest release on GitHub.
