The app is free. The hosted parts are Pro.

Every connection type, on every OS, free. Pro syncs your sessions, folders, logins, tunnels, snippets, layouts and trusted host keys to every computer you own, and opens Terminal Co-op: share tabs with up to two other people. Checkout is in test mode for now, and charges nothing.

What “free” means here.

Apache-2.0. Use it, change it, rename it, share it, at work or at home, on any number of machines; keep the author’s credit. No connection type is held back. You pay only for the two hosted services, sync and Terminal Co-op, which have running costs. Without it, a passphrase-protected export moves sessions by hand.

Questions people ask.

What is XTermium?

XTermium is a terminal with a session manager for Windows, Linux and macOS. Your SSH, SFTP, RDP, VNC, telnet, serial, WinRM, website and BMC console sessions live in one sidebar, in folders you search by typing, and open as tabs and split panes in one window. Everything it keeps is encrypted on disk, and AI agents and scripts can drive it without seeing a password.

Which connection types does it support?

SSH with your agent, keys, passwords and jump hosts. SFTP in a file panel on the same connection. RDP and VNC desktops in a tab. Telnet for switches and routers, serial ports and the local shell, and WinRM for PowerShell on a Windows host. Websites and BMC consoles, in your browser or in a tab. Local, remote and SOCKS5 SSH tunnels with live traffic. Every one is free, on every OS.

Is XTermium free, and what is Pro?

Yes, XTermium is free and open source under the Apache License 2.0: every connection type, on every OS, on any number of machines. Pro is the one paid plan, for the two hosted services: end-to-end encrypted sync between your computers, and Terminal Co-op, which shares tabs with up to two other people. It costs €2.99 a month or €29.99 a year, excluding VAT. Checkout is in test mode for now.

Does it run on Windows, Linux and macOS?

Yes. Windows 10 and 11 (x64) get an installer, an .msi for managed deployment, a portable .zip, or Scoop. Linux (x64) gets a .deb, an .rpm or an AppImage. macOS gets one universal .dmg for Apple silicon and Intel. The .dmg is not signed by Apple yet, so the first time you open it, go to System Settings › Privacy & Security and click Open Anyway.

How do AI agents use the MCP server?

Turn on Settings › MCP and XTermium starts a local MCP server behind a token. That page has the command that adds it to Claude Code, Gemini CLI, Copilot CLI, opencode, Codex or VS Code. The assistant can then open your saved sessions, run commands, read terminals, drive remote desktops and website tabs, and start tunnels. It never sees a password, and while XTermium is locked every tool answers that it is locked.

Where are my passwords kept?

On your own disk, encrypted. Everything XTermium keeps is sealed with XChaCha20-Poly1305 under a random 256-bit data key, and that key lives in your OS keychain, so there’s nothing to type day to day. A recovery passphrase brings it back on a new computer. Remembered passwords stay on this computer unless you choose to sync them. Agents and scripts never see a password, and only the passphrase-protected .xtermium export carries shared logins.

Get it for Windows, Linux or macOS.

Free and open source. One command fetches the latest build from GitHub, checks its sha256 and installs it; read install.ps1 or install.sh first. Every file and its checksum, Scoop included, are under Downloads, and the .msi, .exe, .zip, .deb, .rpm, AppImage and .dmg are in the latest release on GitHub. The macOS app is not signed by Apple yet: how to open it the first time.
