MobaXterm alternative for Windows, Linux and macOS.
XTermium is a free, open-source terminal with a session manager: SSH, RDP, VNC, telnet, serial and more in tabs, encrypted on disk, open to AI agents. Your MobaXterm sessions come with you: import the file MobaXterm keeps them in.
Moving over from MobaXterm.
Import MobaXterm’s bookmarks .ini file, or a .mxtsessions export: folders, jump hosts and tunnels come along, with each session’s font, colours and TERM. Telnet sessions come over too. Stored passwords are not imported, so put each password into a shared login once and let every session pick it.
On Windows, XTermium also comes as a portable .zip that needs no install, and as a Scoop package that keeps your data across updates.
What MobaXterm is.
From its own site, mobaxterm.mobatek.net, read on 4 November 2026:
- An “enhanced terminal for Windows”.
- Packaged as a single executable that needs no admin rights and starts from a USB stick; a portable version is available.
- Remote network tools in one application: SSH, X11, RDP, VNC, FTP, SFTP, telnet, mosh, Xdmcp and more.
- A free Home Edition, and a Professional Edition for use inside a company.
- The free Home Edition allows up to 12 sessions and 2 SSH tunnels; the Professional Edition lifts those limits.
MobaXterm and XTermium, side by side.
The same ten questions, asked of both. Each answer is what the tool’s own pages say, with no scores and no prices of theirs.

|---|---|---|
| Connections | SSH, SFTP, RDP, VNC, telnet, serial, WinRM, BMC consoles and websites | SSH, telnet, Rlogin, RDP, VNC, XDMCP, FTP, SFTP and serial, with mosh and an X11 server |

| Licence | Apache-2.0; the sync server is proprietary | Mobatek’s Home and Pro licences |
| Tabs | Tabs and split panes, with broadcast typing | A tabbed SSH terminal, based on PuTTY |
| Saved sessions | A folder tree with search, workspaces and shared logins | Every session you start, in the left sidebar; the Home Edition keeps up to 12 |
| SFTP | A file panel beside SSH and VNC tabs, on the same connection | A graphical SFTP browser that opens with each SSH session |
| Tunnels | Local, remote and SOCKS5, with live traffic | A graphical SSH tunnels manager; the Home Edition keeps up to 2 |
| Sync | With Pro, end-to-end encrypted | Not mentioned on its site |

MobaXterm’s column is from its own site, mobaxterm.mobatek.net, with its features and download pages, read on 4 November 2026. XTermium’s column comes from its README. “Not mentioned on its site” means the pages read don’t say, not that MobaXterm lacks it.
What XTermium is.
If you come from MobaXterm, most of what you open there opens in XTermium too: SSH with an SFTP panel on the same connection, RDP and VNC desktops, telnet and serial ports, each in a tab, and any tabs split into panes. Your bookmarks .ini file or .mxtsessions export imports with its folders, jump hosts and tunnels. What changes is where it runs and how it keeps things. XTermium runs on Windows, Linux and macOS, and on Windows comes as an installer, an .msi, a portable .zip or a Scoop package. There is no separate edition for use inside a company: the whole app is free under the Apache License 2.0, at work or at home. Everything it stores is encrypted on disk with a key in your OS keychain, each password goes into a shared login you type once, and AI agents can drive it through a local MCP server without seeing a password.
When to stay with MobaXterm.
Stay with MobaXterm if you depend on the parts XTermium doesn’t have. It may fit better when:
- You run remote X11 applications. MobaXterm has an X server built in; XTermium shows remote desktops over RDP and VNC instead.
- You use XDMCP, FTP, mosh or Rlogin sessions, or its Unix tools in the local terminal. XTermium has none of these.
- You build macros. XTermium has snippets, saved commands with placeholders, rather than recorded macros.
- You work only on Windows and the Home Edition’s limits of 12 sessions and 2 tunnels are enough for you.
Free and open source.
XTermium is free and open source under the Apache License 2.0: every connection type, on every OS, on any number of machines. Pro, the one paid plan, is the hosted part: end-to-end encrypted sync between your computers, and Terminal Co-op.
Pro costs €2.99 a month or €29.99 a year, excluding VAT, and its checkout is in test mode for now. Pricing.
Questions about moving from MobaXterm.
Can I import my MobaXterm sessions?
Yes. Import MobaXterm’s bookmarks .ini file or a .mxtsessions export: folders, jump hosts and tunnels come along, with each session’s font, colours and TERM. Stored passwords are not imported, so put each one into a shared login once.
Does XTermium have an X11 server?
No. XTermium opens remote desktops over RDP and VNC, and shows pictures inside the terminal over the kitty graphics protocol, sixel and OSC 1337, but it doesn’t display remote X11 applications.
Does it run on Linux and macOS?
Yes. Windows 10 and 11 (x64) get an installer, an .msi, a portable .zip or Scoop; Linux gets a .deb, an .rpm or an AppImage; macOS gets one universal .dmg for Apple silicon and Intel, not signed by Apple yet.
Is XTermium free for use at work?
Yes. XTermium is free and open source under the Apache License 2.0: every connection type, on every OS, on any number of machines, at work or at home. Pro, the one paid plan, is the hosted part: end-to-end encrypted sync between your computers, and Terminal Co-op, for €2.99 a month or €29.99 a year, excluding VAT.
